The animals adapt to this climate by hibernating, or migrating. The word deciduous means change. The leaves change color in the autumn. They change from green to red, orange, and yellow. The animals in the deciduous forest biome need specific requirements to live there.
The animals adapt to the climate by hibernating in the winter and living off the land in the other three seasons. The animals have adapted to the land by trying the plants in the forest to see if they are good to eat for a good supply of food. Also the trees provide shelter for them. Animal use the trees for food and a water sources. Most of the animals are camouflaged to look like the ground.
The plants have adapted to the forests by leaning toward the sun. Soaking up the nutrients in the ground is also a way of adaptation.

Larger native carnivores require large natural landscapes to persist, periodic large-scale disturbance events such as fire necessitate the conservation of large blocks of forest; many species of plants, lichen, fungi, and invertebrates depend upon late-successional forests.

Precipitation in the temperate deciduous forest falls throughout the year. However, during the winter months it is usually frozen and less is available for animals to drink. Animals living within this biome must adjust to cold winters and hot summers by hibernating, migrating, or keeping active all winter. Leaves fall off trees here in the fall, leaving animals with less cover to hide themselves from predators.http://www.mbgnet.net/sets/temp/index.html

The Deciduous forest does not have much vegetation but there are many trees that contain outrageous amounts of flowers. Animals need these trees because they provide shelter and some use them for food and even water from the leaves. The trees adapt to this forest by having thick bark barriers on the trees to keep the animals out and the trees from dying.

external image GREENBAL.GIF Deciduous forest is one of the biggest forests in the world. There are a lot of major trees in the deciduous forest. One of the main trees is the maple tree. Maple trees are an area for animals to live in. Other plants are oak, beech, pine and cedar.
external image GREENBAL.GIF The deciduous forest provides great scenery and a place for animals to live. A lot of animals use the trees and plants for food. Most of the birds use them for homes. Others use them for shelter from the sun's heat. The trees grow thick bark layers so they can survive the cold weather.
external image GREENBAL.GIF Snails, slugs, insects, and spiders are common inhabitants of the deciduous forest, and many cold-blooded vertebrates, such as snakes, frogs, salamanders, and turtles, are also present. Birds are represented by warblers, flycatchers, thrushes, woodpeckers, hawks, and owls. Prominent mammals include mice, moles, chipmunks, rabbits, weasels, foxes, bears, and deer.
external image GREENBAL.GIF Adapting in nature is a major factor in whether or not an animal will survive. In the forest such adaptations are a snail's hard outer shell which is protection and shelter. A deer's antlers which serve as protection from its enemies. A chipmunk's speed, tree climbing ability, and camouflage help it escape predators. A rabbit's speed makes it to hard to catch, and a bear's overwhelming strength make other animals avoid it.
Plants

The vegetation in the deciduous forest is very scattered. It includes many different kinds of trees and plants. Each plant is affected by the different animals and the climate that populates a deciduous forest.
One type of the deciduous forest vegetation includes the Silver Maple tree. This is a very pretty, well-known, looking tree that resembles the regular Maple, but with different shape and size in the bark and leaves. The forest has only hardwood trees with leaves like; oak, hickory, ash, and beech. The trees here grow 80-100 feet tall.
Another type of tree in the deciduous forest is the ever-so popular mistle toe. This is found in the trees and then shot down and used for holiday decorations.
One of the plants in the deciduous forest is the Butter Nut White. This is a pretty flower with long, beautiful petals which we wish would stay blooming all year round.

There are many deciduous animals. All wildlife is abundant. Bears, deer, bobcats, racoons, squirrels, birds, and invertebrates are some of them. During the winter months the land is usually frozen and unavailable to animals.
A snake, named the Viper looks sluggish except when it is alarmed. Usually it spends much of its time basking in the sun on a tree stump. It feeds on small animals such as lizards and nesting birds. Mating takes place in the spring. Females lay 4-18 eggs.

Bears are large scary carnivores that care for their young. If you see a bear with its young then you better be careful because it will kill you if it sees you. These bears are brown bears and Grizzlies. Grizzlies are the meanest and toughest type of bears.
Another animal in the Deciduous Forest is the bobcat. This animal resembles a house cat but is just a little bit bigger. It has dark colored fur and eats mainly little rodents or anything it can capture.
A squirrel is a rodent that lives and nests in the trees. It mainly feeds on nuts and berries. The squirrel finds and stores food for the winter because they hibernate and need food for the cold freezing season.

Climate
This climate is in the polar front zone - the battleground of polar and tropical air masses. Seasonal changes between summer and winter are very large. Daily temperatures also change often. Abundant precipitation falls throughout the year. It is increased in the summer season by invading tropical air masses. Cold winters are caused by polar and arctic masses moving south.
